James 2:17–18
Readiness Is Action
“Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.”
– James 2:17
Faith that is real moves.
Faith that is genuine acts.
Faith that is alive works.
James says if faith has no action, it is:
- dead
- ineffective
- useless
As the Message Bible puts it:
“God-talk without God-acts is outrageous nonsense.”
Faith Always Produces Action
If you are full of faith, action will always follow.
If someone speaks faith but never moves,
their words are shallow, and their faith is lifeless.
Living in the Kingdom of God requires action.
Throughout Scripture, we are not told to be:
- hearers only
- observers
- spectators
But doers.
Every great man and woman in the Bible didn’t just pray.
They backed their prayers with movement.
Let me remind all of us:
We are not saved by works…
but because He saved us, we do good works.
God didn’t save us to sit down and do nothing.
He saved us to make a difference until He returns.
Jesus Is Coming Back. Are We Ready?
This morning, I want to remind you:
Jesus is coming back.
And I believe we are closer than ever.
While we wait, there are things we must be doing.
Waiting does not mean idleness.
Waiting does not mean passivity.
Waiting does not mean comfort.
Readiness is action.
Sitting back and doing nothing is not God’s plan.
Being alert, active, and faithful is what He expects from us.
The Parable of the Talents – Faith in Action
In the parable of the talents, Jesus shows us how God entrusts every one of us with resources, abilities, influence, time, and opportunity.
And when the Master returns He expects us to have DONE SOMETHING with what we were given.
This parable teaches us:
- Stewardship – We are called to invest what God gives us.
- Accountability – We will answer for how we used it.
- Action over Fear – Faith moves forward even when afraid.
- Reward and Consequence – Faithfulness multiplies; passivity forfeits.
How do we apply this?
Don’t be like the servant who buried his talent.
Be like the servants who multiplied what they were given.
The servant with one talent allowed fear of having less
to destroy his faith that God could still use him.
Let me remind someone today:
It is not what you have…. it is what you do with what you have that matters.
While Jesus Is Away, What Are You Doing?
So let me ask you:
While Jesus is away…
- What are you doing?
- How are you making a difference?
- Are you advancing His Kingdom, or your own?
If He returned today, what would He say?
Well done?
Or… What have you done?
Readiness Is an Action
Jesus reinforces this truth in the parable of the ten virgins.
Five were wise.
Five were foolish.
The wise stayed prepared.
The foolish procrastinated.
When the bridegroom arrived, the door was shut.
Preparation cannot be borrowed.
Readiness cannot be delayed.
Procrastination in the Kingdom is dangerous.
It can leave you behind. It can cost you everything.
Noah’s Day – A Warning for Our Time
Jesus said His return would be like the days of Noah.
People were:
- eating
- drinking
- marrying
- celebrating
They were busy but not ready. Then suddenly, judgment came.
“So you, too, must keep watch! For you don’t know what day your Lord is coming.”
Patience Is Also Action
James reminds us that patience is an action step.
Waiting faithfully keeps our eyes fixed on Jesus
instead of getting distracted by everything else.
James 5:7–8
“Be patient as you wait for the Lord’s return… Take courage, for the coming of the Lord is near.”
Patience doesn’t produce laziness.
It produces focus, consistency, and faithfulness.
The Gospel Call
This is not the time to delay obedience.
This is not the time to postpone repentance.
This is not the time to sit back.
When the people heard the Gospel in Acts 2, they asked:
“Men and brethren… what shall we do?”
That is the right response.
Not debate.
Not delay.
Not distraction.
Action.
Final Challenge
Faith that works – moves.
Readiness – acts.
Kingdom people – do.
So I ask you:
What shall we do?
Because Kingdom Works are not optional,
they are expected. 🔥🙌🏽
