Ephesians 3:20 “Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,”
Ephesians 3:20 NLT “Now glory be to God, who by his mighty power at work within us is able to do far more than we would ever dare to ask or even dream of—infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, or hopes.”
To fully understand the weight of what God is doing in this season, we have to look closely at the “why” behind the word BEYOND. It begins with a fundamental, unshakeable truth that every believer must anchor their soul to: God can do ANYTHING! He is completely and perfectly ABLE.
Nothing is too hard for Him. Nothing is too big for Him. Nothing is too far gone for Him to redeem, heal, or restore. His absolute forte is working in the very realm of the impossible.
If you find yourself in a position this morning where you have done absolutely everything you know how to do, and you have still come up short of your breakthrough, take heart. You are actually the perfect candidate for a miracle.
We must understand the divine division of labor between heaven and earth: we are responsible for the possible.
Our responsibility includes the practical spiritual disciplines available to us:
-
We must pray.
-
We must fast.
-
We must read the Word of God.
-
We must be deeply grateful for what He has already provided.
-
We must intentionally speak FAITH into situations that are dark and those circumstances where we are completely unsure of the outcome.
These are all the things that are entirely possible with us. When we do what we can do, then God will do what we cannot do!
Ground Zero of the Miraculous: Acts 2:1-4
To see this principle in action, we have to look at what it means to move BEYOND PENTECOST. Just recently, we celebrated the historic birth of the church in Acts 2, when God first poured out His Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost:
“And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” (Acts 2:1-4)
On that monumental day, 3,000 souls were added to the church. What started out as a dedicated gathering in an upper room with just 120 people completely set the stage for the global church to walk in the miraculous.
The Infinite Capacity of the Spirit
Before Jesus ever faced death and His ultimate ascension, He gave His disciples a concrete promise regarding exactly what would happen when His Spirit dwelt within them. He wanted them to look past the boundaries of their current limitations.
This brings us right back to the foundational promise found in Ephesians 3:20: “Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.”
As the New Living Translation highlights, His mighty power at work within us is able to do far more than we would ever dare to ask or even dream of, reaching infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, or hopes. Pentecost was not just a one-time historical event to look back on; it was the launching pad for a lifestyle of infinite spiritual capacity.
Step Into Your Candidate Position
Stop stressing over the part of the equation you were never meant to solve. Let go of the frustration of trying to manufacture a supernatural breakthrough with natural strength.
Do your part. Pray, fast, stay grounded in the Word, offer up praise for what you already have, and speak faith into the dark areas. Once you finish doing what is possible, step back with confidence and watch God step into the impossible.
What is the one “impossible” situation in your life right now where you need to hand over the results to God after doing what is possible?
