“Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone… shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.” James 2:17-18
AMP:
“Faith, if it does not have works (to back it up), is by itself dead.”
MSG:
“God-talk without God-acts is outrageous nonsense.”
God Is in the Mundane
God is not only present in the miracles and mountaintops of life.
God is also present in the ordinary, repetitive, unnoticed moments.
- God is in the everyday mundane tasks of life.
- Your ordinary routines are not a waste of time.
- The common, everyday moments of life often become the breeding grounds for miracles.
Every time you get up and do the right thing again, something is happening.
Not always visibly.
Not always dramatically.
But faith is being built.
God takes our small acts of obedience and moves the needle for His Kingdom.
Preparation Happens in Ordinary Days
Consider the life of Moses.
Before leading Israel out of Egypt, Moses spent 40 years tending sheep.
Shepherding seems simple, but it was demanding work.
Daily tasks of a shepherd
- Guiding sheep to safe grazing areas
- Leading them to water
- Checking the flock for sickness or injury
- Repairing fences and maintaining shelters
- Providing feed during difficult seasons
Protective tasks
- Watching for predators
- Finding lost sheep
- Rescuing animals stuck in dangerous places
- Guarding the flock at night
These tasks were repetitive and ordinary.
Yet those 40 years were not wasted.
They were preparation.
The same skills Moses used with sheep would later be used with the people of Israel:
- Guiding
- Protecting
- Leading
- Watching for danger
What he learned in ordinary days prepared him for extraordinary days.
God Prepares Us Through Process
Think about the life of Joseph.
Joseph waited over 20 years to see God’s promise fulfilled.
His journey included:
- The pit
- Slavery
- False accusation
- Prison
- Promotion
- Demotion
None of these moments seemed exciting.
But every stage was preparation.
The work wasn’t always enjoyable…
But the work was working for the good of God’s Kingdom.
Routine Obedience Can Produce Miracles
There is an incredible example of this in the book of Book of Joshua.
The story of Jericho.
The first major battle after Israel entered the Promised Land.
The city was fortified.
The walls were massive.
Yet God gave an unusual strategy.
Joshua told the people:
- March around the city once a day for six days
- On the seventh day, march seven times
- Then shout
God had already declared victory.
But the people had to participate through obedience.
The Power of Silence
For six days the people marched in silence.
They were not allowed to speak.
Why?
Several reasons:
• To prevent murmuring and complaining
• To keep the focus on God’s power rather than their own strength
• To ensure complete obedience to God’s instructions
There are moments in life when the greatest act of faith is simply staying faithful and staying quiet.
Some days we are tempted to complain.
Some days we want to speak doubt.
But sometimes the most spiritual thing we can do is:
Keep walking.
Keep obeying.
Keep trusting God.
Don’t Despise the Mundane
God is in your routine.
To the young parents:
God is there when you are
- changing diapers
- losing sleep
- caring for children
Do not despise those days.
To those working jobs that feel repetitive:
Your daily faithfulness is not meaningless.
God is preparing something in you.
Let me remind you today:
God is in the mundane.
The Gospel Response
When the crowd heard the message in the book of Acts of the Apostles they asked a powerful question.
Acts 2:37
“Men and brethren, what shall we do?”
The Gospel always demands a response.
Faith is not just something we believe.
Faith is something we do.
Closing Challenge
While Jesus is away…
What are you doing with what He has placed in your hands?
Faith that is alive will produce Kingdom works.
