The Word – Part 8: Unwavering Faith: Choosing God No Matter the Cost

Daniel 1:8 (KJV)

“But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.”

Faith That Does Not Waver

Last week my pastor preached a message called “Faith Marches On.” He walked through Hebrews 11—the famous “Faith Heroes” chapter—reminding us that God uses ordinary men and women with extraordinary, unwavering faith to accomplish great things.

The word unwavering is powerful. One definition puts it this way:

“Unwavering describes a strong, steady, and firm attitude, feeling, or action that does not weaken or change. It implies a lack of hesitation or fluctuation, highlighting steadfastness and determination in the face of challenges.”

That’s the type of faith we need—faith that doesn’t back down when tested, faith that stays the course no matter how dark life gets.

Examples of Unwavering Faith

Abraham (Genesis 22) – tested with his son Isaac, yet he spoke faith every step up that mountain. God’s provision always comes through unwavering faith.

Noah – for 100 years he built an ark in a wicked world. His daily faith and tenacity saved his family.

Joshua – at the end of his life, when people around him began to waver, he declared: “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” He made sure his family was anchored in faith.

Parents—your children need to see your unwavering faith. Your consistency can one day spark their own.

Divided Faith Leads to Instability

James 1:6-8 warns us:

“But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea… Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.”

A divided life leads to instability: unstable homes, unstable marriages, unstable children. Why? Because it’s easy to straddle both sides.

  • It’s common not to pray daily.
  • It’s common not to prioritize God’s house.
  • It’s common to hold grudges.
  • It’s common to hate your enemies and your neighbors.
  • It’s common to choose division instead of unity.

That’s the wide gate Jesus warned about (Matthew 7:13-14). But the narrow gate—the way of life—requires unwavering faith.

Elijah’s Challenge

On Mount Carmel, Elijah asked the people a question we still need today:

1 Kings 18:21 (NLT)

“How much longer will you waver, hobbling between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him! But if Baal is God, then follow him!”

There’s no middle ground. Wavering doesn’t work.

Daniel’s Example

When Babylon took captives, Daniel and his friends were pressured to compromise. But Daniel had already made up his mind. He “purposed in his heart” not to defile himself. That kind of resolve doesn’t happen in the moment—it’s built through years of commitment.

Spurgeon once said:

“Be ready for a bad name; be willing to be called a bigot; be prepared for the loss of friendships; be prepared for anything so long as you can stand fast by Him who bought you with His precious blood.”

Daniel lived that truth. And so did Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

When King Nebuchadnezzar threatened them with the fiery furnace, they boldly replied:

Daniel 3:17-18 (KJV)

“Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us… But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.”

That’s unwavering faith—faith that doesn’t bend even when facing the flames.

Small Obedience Leads to Big Faith

David Guzik put it well:

“Many fail in their obedience because they wait for something ‘big’ to test their faith before they really start to obey God… Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego show us that obedience to God in small things really matters.”

If we compromise in the little things, we’ll crumble in the big ones. But if we stand firm daily, we’ll have strength for the furnace moments.

Love God, Not the World

John warns us:

1 John 2:15 (KJV)

“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”

Unwavering faith means unwavering love—choosing God over the world, even when it costs us something.

Final Word

Hebrews 10:23 encourages us:

“Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise.”

Faith that wavers won’t last. But faith that is anchored, steady, and steadfast will carry you, your family, and your future through every test.

We must have unwavering faith.
