John 16:33 (NLT)
“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”
The Lie We Want to Believe: A Life Without Pain
Let’s be honest, nobody wants to go through trials. We all dream of a life free from sickness, heartbreak, loss, and stress. But if anyone tells you that following Jesus guarantees a pain-free, trouble-free life, they’re not just mistaken, they’re spreading bad theology.
Jesus never promised us a life without pain. In fact, He said the exact opposite:
“In this world you will have trouble…” (John 16:33)
Reality Check: Trials Are Part of the Journey
Everyone, believer or not, will face storms in life. No one is exempt. And while some may try to convince you that trials are punishment from God for your past mistakes, that’s not only misleading, it’s spiritually dangerous. Some storms are simply part of being human. Others are divinely used to shape us.
When life is good, God is good.
But when life is hard, God is still good.
Why God Works Best in the Valley
The mountaintop is where we celebrate victories.
The valley is where we grow.
Valleys remind us we’re not self-sufficient. They drive us to our knees in prayer. They make Scripture more than just words, they become lifelines. In the valley, we rediscover that without God, we can do nothing.
As hard as it is to say:
We need the valley.
Paul’s Thorn: A Reminder of Purpose in Pain
In 2 Corinthians 12:7–10, the Apostle Paul talks about a “thorn in his flesh”, a persistent struggle that he begged God to take away. But God responded with something powerful:
“My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.”
— 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NLT)
Paul’s conclusion?
“When I am weak, then I am strong.”
Your trial isn’t meant to destroy you. It’s part of the process that shapes you. It humbles, purifies, and strengthens you in ways the mountaintop never could.
Your Midnight Moment Isn’t the End
Your greatest hour may come in your darkest night.
Your greatest hope may rise when all hope seems gone.
And your most impactful chapter might be written when everyone else thinks your story is over.
Your pain is not pointless. Your setback is not the end. Your suffering is not in vain.
God is not punishing you, He is perfecting you.
Trials Are the Fire That Refines Your Faith
Peter echoes this truth in 1 Peter 1:6–7 (NLT):
“These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold…”
Faith isn’t proven on sunny days, it’s proven when storms rage and you still choose to trust.
The Promise That Never Fails
Just before going to the cross, Jesus comforted His disciples with these words:
“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
— John 16:33 (NLT)
That promise still holds true today.
Jesus didn’t promise we’d avoid trouble. He promised we’d have peace in the midst of it, and victory because of Him.
Final Word: It’s Going to Be OK
Whatever you’re walking through right now, whether it’s grief, uncertainty, pain, or loss, remember this:
You are not alone.
You are not forgotten.
You are not being punished.
And most importantly, you are going to be OK.
Be of good cheer. He has overcome the world.
