Beyond Pentecost: The Father Who Goes Beyond

“Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.” –  Ephesians 3:20

When we think about Father’s Day, our minds naturally turn to the men who have shaped our lives. Some of us were blessed with fathers who modeled generosity, compassion, and integrity. Others have found those same qualities in grandfathers, mentors, pastors, or other father figures.

Yet even the very best earthly fathers have limitations. They make mistakes. They fall short. They cannot always be everything their children need.

The good news of the gospel is that we have a Heavenly Father who never falls short. His love never fails, His compassion never runs dry, and His ability goes far beyond our greatest hopes and dreams.

A Father Unlike Any Other

The influence of a godly father is immeasurable. The sermon begins by reflecting on the impact of faithful father figures who demonstrated generosity, hospitality, and genuine care for others.

Those examples deserve our gratitude.

But they also point us to Someone even greater.

No matter how wonderful an earthly father may be, he is still human. Every father has weaknesses. Every father has room to grow. The greatest fathers are those who recognize their shortcomings and continue striving to become better.

Our Heavenly Father is different.

His love is perfect.

His compassion is limitless.

His faithfulness never changes.

Your Heavenly Father Gives Good Gifts

Jesus painted a beautiful picture of the Father’s heart in Matthew 7.

If earthly fathers know how to give good gifts to their children, how much more does our Heavenly Father delight in giving good things to those who ask Him?

That raises an important question.

Are there blessings we have never received simply because we have never asked?

Jesus immediately follows this teaching with one of the most well-known invitations in Scripture:

“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.”

Sometimes we stop praying too soon.

Sometimes we stop believing too quickly.

Sometimes we assume the answer is “no” before we’ve truly sought the Father.

Don’t Stop Knocking

In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus tells the story of a man who keeps knocking on his friend’s door until he receives what he needs.

The lesson is clear.

Persistent faith matters.

Jesus encourages us not to give up praying, not to stop asking, and not to stop believing that God is able.

Prayer is not about convincing God to care.

Prayer is about trusting the heart of a Father who already does.

A Father Rich in Mercy

One of the greatest characteristics of our Heavenly Father is His mercy.

Paul describes Him as “the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort.” He comforts us in our troubles so that we can extend that same comfort to others.

The psalmist reminds us:

“The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.”

Lamentations offers another powerful reminder:

“His compassions fail not. They are new every morning.”

Every new day brings a fresh supply of God’s mercy.

No matter how many mistakes we made yesterday, His compassion has not been exhausted.

You never wake up to a Father who has run out of grace.

Love That We Could Never Earn

The Gospel reminds us that God’s love is not based on our performance.

Paul writes in Titus that God saved us, not because of our own righteousness, but because of His mercy. Through Jesus Christ, He offers forgiveness, new life, and the work of the Holy Spirit within us.

That is the heart of our Father.

He does not love us because we deserve it.

He loves us because that is who He is.

He Will Never Leave You

As Joshua prepared to lead Israel into the Promised Land, Moses gave him a promise that still brings comfort today.

“The Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.”

Joshua would face battles.

He would encounter uncertainty.

But he could move forward with confidence because he knew God would never leave him.

That promise still stands for every believer.

If you feel forgotten, God is with you.

If you feel discouraged, He has not abandoned you.

If you feel alone, your Heavenly Father is closer than you realize.

As Psalm 34 declares:

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.”

A Father Who Goes Beyond

Our earthly fathers can inspire us.

They can encourage us.

They can point us in the right direction.

But only our Heavenly Father can satisfy the deepest needs of our hearts.

He gives generously.

He responds when we seek Him.

He is rich in mercy.

His compassion is renewed every morning.

He never abandons His children.

That is the Father who goes beyond our highest hopes, our greatest expectations, and our deepest needs.

And because He is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, we can approach Him with confidence, knowing that our perfect Heavenly Father always knows what His children need.
